About Our Wholesome Ingredients
Whitefish Meal:
Whitefish is an excellent high-quality protein source for dogs, and a great alternative for dogs with chicken allergies. Grandma Mae's whitefish is sourced from the cold Arctic waters of the North Atlantic, where cod and hake are caught together and processed onshore, eliminating the need for ethoxyquin, often used as a preservative in other pet foods. Additionally, fish is relatively low in saturated fat and empty calories making it a good choice for weight control.
Peas, Lentils and Chickpeas:
These “legumes” are excellent sources of energy and protein that have a low glycemic index and do not cause blood glucose (sugar) levels to spike right after ingestion. The reason to have more than one is that a dog’s system is likely to digest a variety of these legumes more efficiently than it would if there were only one or two of them.
Canola Oil:
Canola is an excellent substitute for chicken fat in a dog's diet and a great source of essential fatty acids.
Tapioca:
Tapioca, which is derived from the cassava plant, provides a healthy, non-GMO and gluten free source of energy for your dog. It is low in cholesterol and unhealthy fats and is a good source of iron and calcium.
Salmon Meal:
In addition to being an excellent source of protein, salmon is one of the best natural sources of omega-3 essential fatty acids, great for your dog's joints and mobility as well as for healthy skin and a healthy coat.
Carrots:
Among common vegetables, the carrot is the richest source of pro-vitamin A. Carrots also contain beta-carotene—an antioxidant—and vitamins B, C, D, E, K, riboflavin, niacin, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and iron.
Spinach, Watercress and Celery:
Spinach, Watercress and Celery provide antioxidants and health-protecting phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals. They are high in Vitamin A and antioxidants providing protection against free radicals (cancer causing agents).
Parsley:
Fresh parsley is an herb associated with reducing urinary tract inflammation, while aiding in digestion and improving kidney function.
Alfalfa Meal:
Alfalfa, a legume and member of the pea family, is a good source of many nutrients including protein, fiber, trace minerals and vitamins A, B1, B12, C, D, E, and K. It is also known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and diuretic properties.
Kelp:
Kelp is a naturally balanced supplement—an abundant source of minerals, amino acids and vitamins, including essential trace minerals. These nutrients are necessary for the production of enzymes that promote healthy body functions. Kelp contains over 60 minerals and elements and 21 amino acids and simple and complex carbohydrates, which promote glandular health, especially in the pituitary, adrenal and thyroid glands.
Menhaden Fish Oil:
Fish oil contains the natural ingredients needed to produce a lustrous and healthy coat. It also has marine Omega-3 fatty acids.
DL-Methionine:
DL-Methionine is an essential amino acid that promotes urinary health. It raises the acidity of the urine, which helps break down urine crystals and in turn reduces inflammation of the urinary tract. It also regulates the formation of ammonia and can aid in creating ammonia-free urine.
Yucca Schidigera Extract:
When provided in small quantities, such as in Grandma Mae’s Country Naturals, yucca schidigera extract helps boost the immune system and has anti-inflammatory properties.
Choline Chloride:
Generally classified as a B-complex vitamin (referred to as vitamin B4 in some publications), choline influences the metabolism of carotene and vitamin A in animals. It is an essential component in ensuring proper nervous system function.
Calcium Carbonate:
Calcium carbonate provides calcium for bones and teeth. Calcium plays a role in nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, blood coagulation, the activation of enzyme systems, and cardiac function.
Lactobacillus Acidophilus:
Lactobacillus acidophilus is a probiotc-beneficial bacteria that produce organic acids (such as lactic and acetic) and digestive enzymes.
Bacillus Subtilus:
Microbials lessen gas and bloating and promote consistent growth, healthier coats, resistance to disease, and better overall health.
Enterococcus Faecium:
Enterococcus faecium produces short-chain fatty acids that modulate the gut pH level and provide a source of fuel for cells lining the gut. This, in turn, strengthens the intestinal cells, helps enhance nutrient absorption, and stimulates immune functions in dogs.
Niacin:
Niacin is an essential vitamin and part of the vitamin B-complex. A lack of niacin can cause deficiency disease.
Riboflavin:
Riboflavin is a water-soluble vitamin essential for the normal release of energy from carbohydrates, proteins, and fat. It is also essential in the formation of antibodies and red blood cells.
Biotin:
Biotin promotes healthy skin and hair and is necessary for growth, digestion, and muscle function.
Thiamine:
Vitamin B1 (thiamine) promotes growth, stimulates brain action, safeguards the muscles that protect the heart, maintains red blood count, promotes healthy skin, and improves circulation.
Vitamin A:
Vitamin A aids vision, growth, immune function, fetal development, cellular differentiation, and trans-membrane protein transfer. Vitamin A is essential for the repair of body tissues and also benefits bone formation.
Pyridoxine Hydrochloride:
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) plays an essential role in maintaining red blood cells and producing antibodies and nerve tissue.
Vitamin D3:
Vitamin D3 promotes the formation of bones and teeth. It also plays a role in the maintenance of healthy nerve and muscle systems.
Folic Acid:
Folic acid is needed for the processing of sugar and amino acids.
Potassium Chloride:
Potassium chloride is an excellent source of potassium and vitamin A.
Ferrous Sulfate and Iron Proteinate:
Iron aids hemoglobin and myoglobin synthesis as well as energy metabolism.
Zinc Sulfate and Proteinate:
Zinc promotes the mineralization of bone, digestion of protein, and the conversion of calorie-containing nutrients into energy. Zinc further aids in enzyme reaction, cell replication, protein and carbohydrate metabolism, skin health, and wound healing.
Copper Sulfate and Proteinate:
Copper is an essential trace mineral for animals.
Manganese Proteinate:
Manganese is an essential trace mineral for animals.
Sodium Selenate:
Selenium is incorporated into many vital enzymes in the body. It works as an antioxidant that helps protect against free radical damage.
Calcium Iodate:
Calcium iodate provides the iodine necessary for proper thyroid function.
